Surprise! Robert Horry Is A Dick

Every year, Robert Horry seems to win a ring. Similarly, every year Robert Horry tries to prove to the world that he is a jackass. Sadly, only one of these things is widely acknowledged by the American public (hint: it's not the second one).

Last year, Horry famously kicked Steve Nash's ass, which resulted in getting Amare Stoudamire and Boris Diaw tossed from the series. Obviously, he would have to keep up his rep this year.

I present exhibit A, your honor. Here is Mike D'Antoni getting ejected the other day for yelling about Horry's blatantly unsportsmanlike play. The best part is the completely oblivious announcers not quite understanding how such a thing could happen.

I give this series one more game before Robert Horry tries to claw the eyeballs out of Leandro Barbosa's head, only to have the announcers say, "Robert Horry seems to be trying to help Barbosa with his contact lens...why is Mike D'Antoni so angry?"

Wait, I don't get this. Horry's a dick for throwing the ball off an opposing player when they were down 20? is this different than the three or four times Shaq has dome this in this series? I mean, I don't like the Suns or the Spurs, but why is this so especially bad? Dude got frustrated and threw the ball- while it was still in-play- at an opponent. Nobody got hurt. D'Antoni hollered to keep his guys pumped up (good move if they want to win another one) and got tossed. Why is this especially noteworthy?

Whatever you feel about this, you gotta admit the clip showing Horry slamming the ball off of the Suns repeatedly was funny as hell. Ya this particular play wasn't really that bad, but Robert Horry is definitely a dick for what he did to Steve Nash last year. Again, funny video though!

have you ever actually played basketball? are you aware that this is not only a legal play--but one that coaches instruct you to make from jr. high and on?

it's not like the ball was out of bounds, then he flung it at the dude. he made a basketball play, in a basketball game. the score is irrelevant.

Ummm, do you watch the NBA much?

Horry throwing the ball at Amare to get the out of bounds call on the Suns is pretty standard operating procedure for ALL players, ALL teams...

Which is why the announcers didn't understand why Mike D was getting himself tossed...really, it IS that simple.

Players save the ball like that all the time.

it was a legal play, so horry had every right to do it. but it was unneccessary and he did it mostly because he's a dick and he was pissed. i suggest that the next time an opposing player finds themselves falling out of bounds they whip it at horry's face.

i swear, horry and bowen seemed determined to solidly cement their reputations as trash before they retire.

Ya, I gotta agree with Brendan on this one. Horry's flying out of bounds and throws it off a Sun to keep control of the ball. First of all, guys do that all the time. Second of all, even if he does it unnecessarily hard, that is a ridiculous reason to get yourself kicked out of a game when you are up by 20. Just goes to show the mental weakness that makes the Suns a perennial playoff failure.

I didn't get it either until I saw the replay.
Horry wasn't saving a loose ball from going out of bounds. He dribbled the ball right out of bounds for the sole intent of throwing it at a Suns player. He got the pass, dribbled it to the bottom of the hoop where he knew the defenders would tightly follow him, and he hurled it at Stoudamire's crotch (luckily hitting him in the side).
The guy's a complete dick, and will really be remembered for it by the sane fans outside of San Antonio or LA.

@Brendan

It's not any different at all. Well, unless you factor in the fact that people just love the Suns and wish they didn't get routed by someone in the West year after year.

I would agree that it was unsportsmanlike if Horry tossed the ball at someone's junk or even the face. The refs were there and watched the play. They didn't see anything more than a legit play. Must be another one of those conspiracies to let the Spurs win right? I mean, it's just so good for the league to have record low viewership for yet another NBA Finals because the Spurs are playing.

At this point in his career, Horry's only real tool is messing with opponents' heads - and he's certainly got the Suns trained to see his every move as nefarious. This is a pretty good example. I've seen (and performed) this move dozens of times on the pick-up court: you're on your way out of bounds, so you slam the rock off an opponent's knee.

- This move is perfectly legit, entirely legal, and tactically sound.

- This move annoys the hell out of the guy who gets kneecapped (or in this case, nut-capped).

- If the guy doing the nut-capping is a guy you already really disliked, multiply that annoyance by seven zillion.

So I guess you can see D'Antoni's reaction in a couple of different ways. Is he a dumb coach who flies off the handle for no good reason? Or is he a smart coach, who uses a blowout-in-progress as a harmless way to rally his troops against a hated foe and show his dedication to them? Or is he a smart coach who does dumb things from time to time, like every single time he's ever faced the Spurs in the Playoffs?

It is noteworthy because had that been Stat it would have been a flagrant. But becide that I think it was something else that got him worked up. I want to know why Boris Diaw has a black eye from Duncans elbows (Duncan makes the same move Shaq makes) and Shaq has all the fouls for it? I want to know why Stat has gotten flagrants and technicals only to watch other players do exactly the same thing the next play. That's why it is noteworthy because it adds to the idea that the rules are not black and white but distributed by how the Refs feel at a certain moment. If one team is not allowed to show emotion why is another? If one team is allowed to be aggressive physically why isnt the other? Makes you wonder sometimes.

I completely agree with Brendan on this one. I've seen Barbosa, Bell AND snaq do this multiple teams over the course of this series; and I think the real story here is the class possessed by a coach getting tossed when up by 20+ in the 4th. It's a little league move no doubt, but another example of phx whining when something they've patented gets used on them (IE- physical screens, flopping, etc, etc.)

Uh... Horry's unsportsmanlike because he didn't want to lose possession of the ball? He threw it off Stoudemire to save it. Even Amare isn't bothered by it because it's A REGULAR BASKETBALL PLAY.

D'Antoni's just mad 'cause he looks like the Pringles guy.

That's no reason to be that upset. It's not like Horry was chucking a rock at Amare. It's a basketball play seen hundreds of times a day at courts across the country.

I think the point he's making is that he threw it at his crotch area. I don't know if its intentional, but I think that's what he's going for. I mean just throwing the ball at someone to retain possession in and of itself is a common thing to do.

everyone and their mom has done this play at one point or another
everyone complaining about it is just being a whiner and a hater on the spurs cause they're tired of the spurs tearing the suns apart every year

Anonymous said...

that move was intentional when i got the ball he did not loose control and could have gone for a lay up
he's a douche

I love it. As was stated above, just another attempt by the suns to take attention away from the real happenings. That is them getting their aasseess kicked year in and year out; shaq or no shaq. Consistent underachievers making excuses.

Ok. I am a big time Suns fan, and BIG TIME Cheap Shot Bob (Horry ) hater. Even I know that this is a completely legal basketball play. I believe a previous poster said it is taught from jr high on up......That is a true statment.

d'antoni is about to grace the tnt halftime booth, i see a new head coach at phoenix next year with the gm blowing up the team keeping stoudamire, bell, diaw, and trading or waiving shaq and nash. time to start all over phoenix,

GO LAKERS!!!!!!!

first off why even try to start an argument over this situation, horry made a legal basketball move in a blow out game move on....second of all why on earth would coach d have amare in the game with such little time left? what does he have to prove? Q: what kind of coach puts his "star" player in that kind of situation? A: one thats job is on the line, its like college football you cant beat your rival year after year when it counts guess what you get fired!! coach d complains more than anyone i know and it sad cause they had the game won at 11-1 in the first, shut your mouth and just do your job. i'm sick and tired of eveyone making excuses or bitching about calls or fouls, its the playoffs win or go home...obviously the spurs know how to win and they will continue to do so until the suns man up and actually finish a game suns fans shouldnt be angry with the spurs they should be angry with their suns that cant finish a game they should be the ones up 3-1 not the other way around..for all you suns fans MAN UP and SHUT UP...go spurs go!

I didn't think you would post my comment from yesterday. Horry and the "dirty" Spurs will play on while the Suns will face another summer wondering how to make it to the finals with their current players. I'm sure the Suns will complain for a while that the Spurs had the series handed to them by the league again.

u guys wat the hell, its legal, but first of all unsportsmanshiplike
second of all he was not SAVING the ball from going out, he DRIBBLED the ball straight out for absolutely no reason and then threw it at amares family jewels, maybe d antoni dint do the rite thing but seriously horry aint gettin popular anytime soon

shayan said...

I don't think that knocking the ball off Amare was a dirty play, but I do hate Horry ever since last year when he unnecessarily bodychecked Steve Nash. That was uncalled for, and you can argue all you want but that was a big time cheap shot on Horry's part.

What is up on the Robert Horry Fan Club Site?
